Godsmack in the face

Now I'd like to talk about a group that I discovered too much recently over the last summer at the Woodstock en Beauce festival.  I must say that I was not expecting such a level of musical talent and energy on scene that special night. I was really blessed.  Between the great Grimskunk, Radio Radio, Cowboys Fringants, Steve Hill and even the good old rock'n'roll lady Pat Benatar, Godsmack had hitten me right in the heart that night.  So, the following week, I was rushing to the closest musical store and bought all albums from Godsmack they had in store.  I was surprised to discover how long they have been on the road: first album released in 1998 (eponyme), then eventually succeeded 6 albums (Awake, Faceless, The other side, Godsmack IV, Good times, bad times: 10 years of Godsmack, and the most recent one 2010 The Oracle), not counting all their live dvd concerts. Needless to say that they have been pretty much prolific as of today. I bet the next album should follow within the next year.  Godsmack have certainly not reinvented the hardrock / metal music.  They are just honnestly speaking with their guts and inside.  They don't play the rock'n'roll superstar heroes, they just play on stage and deliver the goods.  And that's what I like and expect from a hardrock group.

After listening one album after another, we may pretty well feel the evolution of their musical chemistry.  The level of talent has always been there, no doubt about it.  But I figure that over 10 years playing together, a group can eventually discover their real synergy and level of intensity.  Just watching them on a stage make you realised how tight the four of them can play together and it is a real treat to be able to feel this as much as on a stage as in a recording studio album.  I just hope that they will keep the same rythmn of evolution in their future albums.  Sometimes groups who play that style of hard rock / metal songs get breathless a little and become a group of many, loosing their synergy and finally recording albums less and less interesting.  Long live to Sully Erna, Robbie Merrill, Tony Rombola and Shannon Larkin of Godsmack.  You guys make me feel like I'm 20 again.  And you guys certainly don't suck at all!

Appreciation:  3 1/2 étoiles
